The wine's story
For many people, fine winemaking is an art comparable with anything undertaken by Van Gogh or Leonardo da Vinci. When you come across a winemaker who’s also a passionate painter and a sculptor, with vineyards littered with works of art nestled between the vines, you know you’re in for something truly special and unique. Mahana is an organic winery, based in the Nelson region of New Zealand, and is the latest project undertaken by the visionary minds behind Woollaston Estates, and since the 1990s it has gone from strength to strength.
Today, the winery is run by Glen Schaeffer, a writer, artist, academic, respected collector and talented winemaker, whose passion for high quality organic wines has seen him recently heralded as one of the top vintners in all of Oceania.
Using innovative techniques, gravity presses and small, carefully selected batches, Glen Schaeffer considers his wine as part of an ongoing ‘performance’ - expressing a time and a place in a bottle, to be enjoyed and considered and savoured.
