Errazuriz Estate Pinot Noir 2013
Aconcagua - Chile
The wine's story
Travel about a hundred kilometres north from the Chilean capital, Santiago, and you’ll find yourself in a wine region which has the climate, soil quality and - most importantly - passionate vintners which could rival the most highly esteemed corners of France or Spain, making this part of Chile one of the world’s leading locations for fine wine. It is here, in the Aconcagua Valley, that we find the beautiful winery of Errazuriz, founded in 1870 by Don Maximiano Errazuriz. This visionary vintner took a bold move in a new world, but transformed this barren piece of land into a viticultural paradise which continues to blaze a trail for Chilean winemakers to this day. By importing the finest French clone vines he could find, he established a piece of Europe in the wilds of Latin America, and for several generations now, his family have reaped the benefits of his decisions, striving to maintain the lofty reputation he developed for himself.
Today, Errazuriz is run by the 6th generation of Don Maximiano’s family, headed by the characterful winemaker Eduardo Chadwick. The current goal of the Errazuriz winery is to continue exploring the land that has been handed down to them, and to continue reaching for those ultimate goals of expression and distinction. They believe they possess some of the finest land for grapevines in the world, and they’re eager to show their audience just how good Chilean wine can be.
Pinot Noir is one of the world’s great food pairing wines. Medium of body, rich and fruity, easy to drink and bursting with soft, jammy flavours, it’s always a joy to drink alongside a wide range of foods which include everything from charcuterie to salmon, lamb to turkey. Chilean Pinot Noir tends to be more sweetly fruited than those made elsewhere in the world, and this makes it absolutely heavenly with duck and small game birds like quail and partridge, as well as sweetly spiced pulled pork. It also goes very well with seared salmon and tuna - ignore those who say red wine can’t be served with fish!
