The wine's story
If you’ve got siblings of your own, then you’ll know the story perfectly well: as kids, your parents would go crazy trying to get you to stop fighting and looking for activities you can get involved with together if only to stop the screaming for five minutes. This was certainly the case for rival brothers Angus and Sam Wardlaw, who - by their own accounts - were an absolute bloody nightmare for their mother during their formative years. Luckily, their dad was David Wardlaw - one of the original winemaker pioneers in the Barossa Valley in the 1970s - whose knowledge and awe-inspiring wine cellar finally united the warring Wardlaw brothers, when they finally reached legal drinking age.
Today, Angus and Sam might not agree on everything, but they’re more than capable of sharing the same vision when it comes to the production of their superb Barossa Valley wines. They set up Brothers at War in 2013, and made it a personal goal to reach out to all of the valley’s finest grape growers, and continue the work their dad had started decades earlier. The result? Unique, characterful wines, which perfectly represent the laid-back, approachable and relaxed atmosphere we associate with this gorgeous part of Australia. Sommelier notes
The ‘brothers at war’ are Angus & Sam, but they have a mate who occasionally steps in to adjudicate the fight. This is the ‘some other guy’ – Matt, and he deserves a bit of attention as well.
This wine is a classic GSM blend, made in a modern, medium weight style. It displays ample red fruits - think red cherry and raspberry - backed up with orange peel and a hint of pepper.
It's a true representation of the Barossa, with its warm fruit and comforting style, but has enough edge and grip to keep things interesting.

Food pairings
This wine from Brothers at War is a classic GSM blend, making the most of Barossa Valley’s best Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre grapes, and bringing them together to produce something which is more than the sum of their parts. It deserves a rustic, meaty, hearty dish - something with plenty of fat and spice, and the kind of dinner you’d look forward to at the end of a cold, wet dinner. Lamb fits the bill very nicely, especially when cooked in a Moroccan tagine or rich stew, as does game meat, and sirloin or t-bone steak with pepper sauce. Think big, deeply flavoured, home-cooked dishes which haven’t had their edges sanded down, and you’ll be onto a winner.
