This wine's story
When it comes to fine Australian wine, there are few regions better than the Yarra Valley. This special corner of the country has everything you need for exquisite viticulture and world-beating wines; a cool climate for balance and finesse, varied soil types and terrain, and a slew of talented winemakers on a mission to capture what makes this region unique in each and every bottle. The Nunc label was created with the idea in mind to produce highly drinkable, affordable and approachable wines which could stand side by side with the region’s best produce, and offer a real sense of place in the glass. David Mackintosh, of Arfion fame, was keen to get involved, and set about crafting a set of wines which were all about finesse, elegance and purity, and which were capable of bringing something new and exciting to the region.
The wines produced under this label come from some of Yarra Valley’s best subregions, where yields are extremely low, and capable of producing grapes packed full of excited features and expression. The fruit is handled with care and meticulous attention to detail - the idea is to get the full personality of the grape in the bottle, in order to ensure that nothing is lost and the drinker gets an unadulterated hit of Yarra’s finest characteristics. The name of this label comes from a line from the Latin Poet Horace: Nunc est bibendum (now is the time for drinking!) which perfectly sums up the immediacy and irresistible nature of the wines, all young freshness and bright, youthful character.
Pinot Gris is one of the great white wine varietals, and presents a brilliant freshness which makes it a joy to pair with foods. It’s one of those grapes which seems to pair best with foods which other types of wine struggle with - I love it with cured and smoked salmon, where the slight sweetness and herbal qualities come forward beautifully. It also is one of the few white wines which works brilliantly with spicy Asian cuisine, such as Thai fish cakes, green curry and the most popular Indian dish of them all, chicken tikka masala.
David Mackintosh is a New Zealand winemaker now living in Melbourne. A talented, free-thinking guy, he crafts a number of wines from various sites in the Yarra Valley.
This is his latest release, under the Nunc label. This is modern Australian Pinot Gris at its best - multi-faceted, textural, interesting, delicious and mouthwatering. A blend of 3 separate vineyards within the Yarra, each chosen for a different flavour profile. The wine is given a lovely aromatic lift with the addition of around 3% Gewurztraminer, as well as a tickle of ginger spice. Complex and brilliantly made.
