This wine's story

For many people, fine winemaking is an art comparable with anything undertaken by Van Gogh or Leonardo da Vinci. When you come across a winemaker who’s also a passionate painter and a sculptor, with vineyards littered with works of art nestled between the vines, you know you’re in for something truly special and unique. Mahana is an organic winery, based in the Nelson region of New Zealand, and is the latest project undertaken by the visionary minds behind Woollaston Estates, and since the 1990s it has gone from strength to strength.

Today, the winery is run by Glen Schaeffer, a writer, artist, academic, respected collector and talented winemaker, whose passion for high quality organic wines has seen him recently heralded as one of the top vintners in all of Oceania.

Using innovative techniques, gravity presses and small, carefully selected batches, Glen Schaeffer considers his wine as part of an ongoing ‘performance’ - expressing a time and a place in a bottle, to be enjoyed and considered and savoured.

Pinot Gris is a brilliantly flexible white wine, full of refreshing character and crisp fruit flavours. It pairs comfortably with a wide range of vegetable dishes, and works well with white meats, too. However, the classic pairing for Pinot Gris would be a fine fish dish, something like firm salmon or other meaty fish, served with green vegetables or a salad.

Sommelier Notes

Michael Glover is an idiosyncratic man, making idiosyncratic wines. Having spent time at renowned Geelong estate Bannockburn, he returned to his native New Zealand a couple of years ago to take on new project Mahana. This pinot gris comes from an organically farmed vineyard and offers a complex yet tangy and super moreish wine. Green apple, white pear and delicate florality combine for a dry, savoury and elegant Pinot Gris.
