This wine's story

Nestled behind the beautiful Adelaide Hills, in the small town of Oakbank, we find the family-run winery of Murdoch Hill. Here, the Downer family have been working the land for generations, having run the farm since the 1930s. As such, there isn’t much they don’t know about this place, and their farm has seen all manner of animals grazing and crops growing on the fertile soils over the past eighty years. It was in the 1990s, however, that the Downers decided that Murdoch Hill’s future was going to be in the production of fine Australian wines.

Michael Downer, the baby of the family, was inspired by a trip to Italy, and cut his teeth in the historic and world-beating wine region of Barolo, where deeply-coloured Nebbiolo grapes grow on foggy hillsides and the wine flows freely. On returning to Australia, he recognised the potential of the land his family had worked since long before he was born, and set about turning the farm over to wine production. It was clearly the right move to make, as since then, Murdoch Hill has produced 15 characterful vintages of Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and others. The family believe in keeping things simple and honest, and as such, there is a great emphasis on hand pruning and hand picking, ensuring that the wines made at Murdoch Hill express the land they are grown on to their fullest.

Sommelier Notes

Michael Downer is a second generation vigneron in the Adelaide Hills, taking over the reins of his family estate and pushing some stylistic boundaries with innovative blends and the introduction of new grape varieties. This is a blend based on Cabernet Sauvignon, backed up with Shiraz and Pinot Noir! Strongly Cabernet on the nose, the palate is softer and finer, with a gentle tannin structure and plenty of layered mulberry and raspberry fruit notes. Excellent fruit definition, and full of personality.
