This wine's story

You can always trust the Scots to do a job well - they’re hardy people, who don’t take no for an answer. There aren’t many wineries that far north, though, to be fair. As such, it took winemaker Christine Kernohan a trip to the other side of the world to find her calling, and the results are clearly worth every mile travelled. The Kernohans take their wine seriously, and are passionate spokespeople for their region, firmly believing in the quality of their terroir as well as organising various cultural events on their land and in the surrounding area.

The 12000 Miles range is Christine’s personal project, and demonstrates what the winery she runs with her partner David - Gladstone Vineyard - does so well. This small, fiercely independent winery is based in Wairarapa, New Zealand, a region which is quickly beginning to turn heads in the world of wine thanks to the maverick spirit of the vintners who’ve settled there, as well as the quality of the produce coming out it. These are unmistakably New World wines; big, bold fruit flavours packed full of character, but with subtle links back to the Old World, thanks to the use of French oak barrels in the ageing process.

Pinot Gris is one of the great grape varietals of the old world, with its spiritual home being in the wonderful French region of Alsace. It is a beautifully aromatic wine, with a tiny hint of sweetness, making it an exciting choice for pairing with a wide range of foods. Pinot Gris is one of the few wines which pairs comfortably with a range of spicy foods, especially rich, gently spiced Indian curries like a chicken tikka masala. It also goes beautifully with smoked salmon, where the sweetness is very much brought out in fantastically rounded ways, as well as things like Thai fishcakes with chilli sauce - a real winning combination of salt and spice and sweetness.

Sommelier Notes

12,000 Miles is produced by Gladstone Vineyard in the south eastern corner of New Zealand. 12,000 Miles is committed to the environment through sustainable / environmentally aware practices in both the vineyard and the winery, meaning no chemicals were sprayed on the vines! The wine has delicious aromas of yellow peach, nectarine and hints of cinnamon and ginger. The palate is rich and rounded with soft acidity and a lovely fleshiness.
